5 Things to Know When Planning Your Destination Wedding in Homer, AK

Whether you are planning a large destination wedding at AK Diamond J Ranch , or an intimate celebration on the quiet shores of Between Beaches, there is A LOT that goes into planning your trip – especially when it’s somewhere you’ve never been. From logistics to location details, the uncertainty can feel overwhelming. No worries though, you came to the right place. As a long time Homer local, I’m excited to share 5 tips that will make planning your destination wedding in Homer, AK a breeze.

Meet your Homer, AK Wedding Photographer

Hi, I am Laurel – a longtime Homer local and wedding & elopement photographer. I have been capturing love stories in Homer for over 8 years (I know, pretty wild, right?), and there are a few things I believe will come in handy as you begin planning your very own destination wedding in Homer, AK.

5 Tips for planning your Homer wedding if you are from out of state

Locals are your friends

Booking local wedding vendors will save you sooo much time, stress – and lets’ be real, money. 👀 Local vendors know the best places to get married (Hi, that’s me!), where to stay and eat, what activities to build into your trip, which companies are the most reliable, and what to bring for Alaska’s ever-changing weather.

A local is prepared for whatever the day throws your way, and you will avoid additional travel fees that often come with bringing vendors from out of state or out of town.

My Go-To Homer, AK Wedding Vendors

Specifically, working with a local planner can be especially helpful – they will connect you with trusted vendors, handle logistics, and offer you peace of mind knowing that even a “worst-case scenario” is already planned for.

Local knowledge is incredibly valuable and can turn planning a wedding or elopement in a place you’ve never been into a smooth, stress-free experience.

A Few of My Favorite Local Vendors :

Be prepared for all weather

Homer is a pretty rainy town – and it can be breezy, too. The good news? A little rain doesn’t have to ruin your day. Attitude is everything here. If your venue doesn’t offer a covered space, consider setting up a tent or be ready to embrace the raindrops (umbrellas are your friend, too).

Weather Essentials When Getting Married in Homer, AK

  • Waterproof shoes
  • Rain jacket & warm layers (Light layers are best)
  • Sunglasses
  • Hiking boots in case you are planning to explore
  • Don’t forget sunscreen! (If you’re out on the water or spending long days outside under the midnight sun, it’s a must.

In the summer, temperatures may hover in the 50’s or 60’s, but many non-locals are surprised by how warm it actually feels when the sun is shining. You might get more use out of those lighter layers than you expect.

Make the Drive – you won’t regret it!

While there are flights from Anchorage to Homer, I ALWAYS recommend renting a car in Anchorage and making the drive to Homer. The trip takes about 4.5 hours and is one of the most scenic drives in Alaska.

You’ll travel along the Turnagain Arm (keep an eye out for mountain goats on the cliffs and belugas when the tide is up), pass through the mountains at Turnagain Pass, wind past the turquoise waters of Cooper Landing, and continue through Soldotna before reaching the breathtaking view of Homer that makes many people never want to leave once they arrive.

Take your time and soak it all in. If your schedule allows, stretch your trip with a night in Girdwood, Cooper Landing, Kenai, or even a detour to Seward. The drive itself is an experience – and far too beautiful to miss.

Consider the time of year you want to visit

Think about the scenery and atmosphere you’re envisioning for your day. Dreaming of fields of fireweed in Bloom?

Mid-July through August is your window.

Bride and Groom kissing in fireweed blooms.

Prefer purple lupine blowing in the ocean breeze?

June is perfect.

If you are dreaming of moody fall colors and the quiet of slow season, September offers something truly special.

And for the adventurous at heart, winter brings opportunities for skiing, snowy landscapes, cozy cabin snuggles, breathtaking sunsets and a chance to see the Northern Lights.

Beyond scenery, it’s also important to consider what activities you would like to experience while you’re here. Many Alaskan experiences are season-dependent, so take some time to think about what you want your trip to include and make sure your timing aligns.

For example, whale sightings, king salmon fishing, birding opportunities, and even crowd levels can vary greatly throughout the year. Planning with these factors in mind can help you make the most of your time in Alaska – both on your wedding day and beyond.

Get out into Kachemak Bay – JUST DO IT!

Kachemak Bay is at the heart of what makes Homer feel like Homer. The waters that surround this small town have shaped the community, the culture and the way of life here. While Homer itself is incredibly special, you can’t fully experience it without spending time out on the bay. Exploring the beautiful waters of Kachemak Bay offers a deeper connection to this place – and often becomes one of the most memorable parts of any trip to Homer. In fact, Lauren & John had the most beautiful, intimate Kachemak Bay wedding featuring a sea cave and a boat ride with their closest family and friends.

Weather you want to incorporate Kachemak Bay into your wedding day, or experience it’s beauty on your own time – Here are some favorite ways to explore:

The options are truly endless and there truly is something for everyone. Getting out into Kachemak Bay is often the most memorable part of a Homer visit. It’s a Destination Wedding after all, you might as well take advantage of everything this amazing destination has to offer!
